There are many different types of fretted instruments, developed in various places across history.  Although they can often look similar to the casual observer, a skilled player will be able to produce a range of sounds unique to each particular instrument's design and construction.  Sometimes the tone is affected by the materials used in construction, sometimes by the size, and sometimes by the way the strings are tuned in relation to each other.  Yet another factor can be that not all instruments will necessarily be built using a fret spacing of twelve tones in equal temperament.  These pages take you to a few YouTube videos of specific instrument types.  More will be added over time.
